Colton, Mary D. a lifelong Mt. Vernon resident and retired legal secretary for the city’s Law Department, died Monday after a long battle with emphysema. She was 84.
Known for her inquiring mind and wide range of interests and friends, Mary’s spirit and energy touched all who met her. Her work as a legal secretary under numerous Mt. Vernon administrations in the 1940s and again from 1968 to 2000, was marked by a passion for accuracy and hard work. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and as “Aunt Mary” was adored and respected by all in her family.
She loved opera and jazz, Broadway and Sinatra, cruises with friends and long phone calls discussing the details of a sweater or news of a nephew or niece. She could do the New York Times crossword in ink.
When she was the victim of a carjacking in 1998, her nephew Michael Mosca, then chief of Mt. Vernon police, caught the perpetrator. She emerged unhurt, but offered such an engaging account of the ordeal – she stubbornly negotiated with the assailant to keep her wallet -- that TV newscasts played the story repeatedly.
In her later years, she remained a source of wisdom and laughter to all, and she will never be forgotten.
Born to Salvatore and Louise (Dato), DiGregorio on March 2, 1922, she was a graduate of the former Edison High School. She worked for various Mt. Vernon lawyers in the 1950s and 1960s, who relied upon her stenography and precision, as did the Mt. Vernon City Council and corporation counsels.
She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Colton, her sons David and Richard, her granddaughter Tara, and her daughter-in-law, Eileen, who was a source of comfort and dedication in Mary’s final years. She was predeceased by her beloved brother, Angelo DiGregorio and his wife Ann, and by her beloved sisters, Stella Lawson and Rose Re. She leaves numerous nephews and nieces, in-laws past and present (Sal Mosca, Herb Lawson and Otto Re), an army of Coltons young and old, many dear friends, and former co-workers.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, Jan. 11, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Yannantuono Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 12 at the funeral home. A family burial will be at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley.
