Obituary:
Quaranta, Salvatore, 97, passed away on May 2, 2010. A life-long resident of Mount Vernon, he attended daily Mass at Saints Peter & Paul Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and spending time with his family was what he cherished most. He was married for 68 years to the former Amelia Tuccillo, deceased in 2004. He i survived by his daughter, Maryanne Spiridigliozzi (Joseph) – three grandchildren, Joseph Spiridigliozzi, Jr. (Carol), Paul Spiridigliozzi (Ana), Janet Galimi (Dominick) – three great-grandchildren, Jessica, Gregory and Nicole. He is also survived by one brother, Alphonse Quaranta of Florida, and pre-deceased by sisters Madeline Veteri, Rose Vecchione and Ann DiMarzo and by his brother Joseph Quaranta. He will also be missed by all of his nieces and nephews and by his caring friends, especially his friends at “The Breakfast Club”.
Sal attended local grammar schools, Mount Vernon High School and attended Advanced Management Studies at Syracuse University, a program sponsored by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
As a business executive active for 50+ years and ardent civic volunteer, he started “Forty Vendors”, a vending machine business in 1937. He served as President of the Italian Civic Association and was one of the founders of I.C.A. Scholarship Fund. As Past President, Secretary and Member of the Board of Directors of the Lions Club of Mount Vernon, he earned a 48 year membership award and also received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award; the highest award presented by the Lions Club International.
He served 40 years as President of the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce and helped many small businesses obtain financing through grants and loans. He was President of the former Community Chest and served as a member of the Board of Directors. He served for 20 years as Community Coordinator of the United Way of Westchester; in addition to serving as a volunteer consultant for the Mount Vernon Area of the United Way. He was one of the founding members of the Senior Citizen Center of Mount Vernon. He also founded the Home Health Care Agency of Mount Vernon in 1972, a non-profit business that employed approximately 100 people dedicated to improving the quality of human life and concern for those who need home health care service. He served as its Executive Director until his retirement in 2006.
Selected Most Distinguished Citizen of Mount Vernon in 1954 and was presented the Distinguished Service Award at a city-wide ceremony in 1955 recognizing his achievements in the cause of civic welfare and for the furtherance of good will among all people in the City of Mount Vernon. He was presented with the Community Service Associates Humanitarian Award in 1999 by Mayor Ernest D. Davis and was a recipient of Community Service Medallion Award presented by Mayor Thomas E. Sharpe for outstanding community service during the Fund Raising Campaign for the purchase of Bullet Proof Vests for all policemen of Mount Vernon. Honored by Mount Vernon Hospital for outstanding and distinguished service to the hospital and he was inducted into the Mount Vernon High School Hall of Fame in 1984.
