Mary Beverly Smith died in White Plains, New York on September 3, 2008 at the age of 58.
Mary was born Mary Beverly Jones on April 6, 1950 to Inez and Elijah Jones in St. Mary’s Parish Jamaica, West Indies. During her adolescent years she developed an inner strength that would follow her for the rest of her days. As the only sister among four brothers she was determined to show that nothing can compare to a woman’s courage, will and tenacity. In 1978 that determination caused her to migrate to the United States of America, where she settled in Mount Vernon, New York. She eventually pursued a career in real estate and within a few years became a top sales agent for Century 21. In 1994, her entrepreneurial spirit and superior salesmanship led her to start an independent real estate firm named Smith’s Realty, Inc. In 2006, she realized a lifelong dream and was awarded a Century 21 franchise bearing her name. Mary was happiest when she had good food and conversation with family and friends. She would often tell those closest to her to live, love and laugh. Mary’s trademarks were her big personality and even bigger heart. However, her greatest accomplishments and proudest moments in life came from her three children.
Mary is survived by her companion and friend Hugh Beason in White Plains, New York, her first born son Phillip Dacosta and his wife Opal in White Plains, New York, her only daughter Bridgette Bell and her husband Damon in Gaithersburg, Maryland, her youngest son Gerald Smith and his wife Sandra in White Plains, New York, her stepdaughter Karen Smith in Mount Vernon, New York, her grandsons Jayson-Parrish Smith in Bronx, New York, Benjamin Bell in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Jaiden Smith in White Plains, New York, Chad Christian in Mount Vernon, New York, her granddaughters Ashley and Taylor Dacosta in White Plains, New York, and Kaley and Ava Bell in Gaithersburg, Maryland , brothers Basil Benbow of Jamaica, Eric Armstrong in Jamaica, Harold Jones in Mount Vernon, New York, Frederick Jones in Jamaica, Thomas Jones in Jamaica, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mary bravely lived through the passing of her father, mother and brother Roydell “Sama” Armstrong.
Mary’s life and accomplishments are truly an inspiration, and success.
